This weeks photography workshop focused on bouncing a flash off coloured paper to make drops of water look cool.

The set-up -

A piece of clear plastic balanced across two tables and the camera pointing down straight through it to the floor.
Water sprayed onto the plastic to create random water patterns.
Coloured paper on the floor.

Using a shutter release cable in one hand and the speedlight in the other it was a case of clicking the shutter (which was set to 0.8 seconds) and then firing the speedlight. The results as you can see are pretty cool.

Back to School

The youth workers are now familiar faces around Heolddu Comprehensive School and have been busy attending different groups and activities that are run during the lunch breaks as well as continuing the Q group on Fridays.

Last week they even supported the year 10 rugby game against Rhymney which took place straight after school.

So now we have the main page that shows the featured post, then 3 latest ‘news’ posts.

A seperate blog page that just shows the normal loop contain all posts (10 per page)

The blog page now needs to be styled properly and a few other bits need fixing then we could see about going live, i.e, getting the gigabites.co.uk domain to point here!

Gigabites Gets Wet

This was the scene on Monday after a weekend of water pouring in from the top floor of the Emporium building. The water actually started coming in on Friday and chose the fire alarm as the point of entry which made them all go off, causing great discomfort to everyone’s hearing. Professionals were called in to stop the alarms and the land lord was contacted.

The actual leak wasn’t stopped however until the Monday so the youth workers office got the full contents of the central heating system of the top floor, resulting in a lot of equipment being destroyed, a saturated carpet and a really bad smell!

Because of this, we won’t be able to open the building for the young people and so the youth workers will be doing detached youth work around Bargoed.

Who’d be a Youth Worker?

Just because Gigabites HQ is closed from a little water damage, doesn’t mean the youth workers are going to sit around doing nothing!

No, they will be going out and doing they’re absolute best possible detached youth work to date so keep your eyes peeled and don’t be afraid to approach.

So the youth workers obviously have they’re work cut out for them, it’s understandable they need a little play time too eh?

Table Tennis Championships

Rev Andy Bookless, local Vicar and Chair of “Churches in Action” (the charity which runs Gigabites), undertook a Sponsored Table Tennis Challenge in May to raise funds for Gigabites. The aim was to play 50 continuous short table tennis games against all-comers. In the end, he actually played 63 games, taking on a succession of young people and some local church members (and remained unbeaten!). The event was advertised in the Rhymney Valley Express which resulted in a surprise phone interview with Premier Christian Radio. He was grateful to everyone who supported him in raising £1005.

Sponsored Cycle Ride

Nathan Oakes (youth worker at Gigabites) and his friend Luke Oates thought it would be a good idea to raise money for Gigabites by doing a sponsored cycle ride from Lands End to John O’Groats. With only 4 weeks training they set off from Lands End on Sunday 9th August and reached the tip of Scotland on 22nd August.

Accommodation was organized before the trip, staying in church halls meant saving money and introduced them to many kind and interesting people. The boys were averaging about 60 miles a day setting off at 9:30 am and finishing around 4-5 pm. Howard Oates (Luke’s Dad) would pick them up and take them to where they were staying that night and drop them off at that same spot in the morning for them to carry on. The first few days were really hard, not only were they cycling more than they ever had before but on day 2 they had to cycle over Dartmoor which took its toll.
Nevertheless they carried on every day for 14 days. Another hard day was in Scotland, the longest distance they covered in one day which was 80 miles but on top of that it rained all day along with strong winds. Once they had finished and were back home collections were taken from everyone who sponsored. The total raised is £2500 to which Gigabites is very grateful.
